Rapid Prototyping Technologies Enhance Innovation Opportunity

For those involved in product development, engineering, and other form-giving applications, rapid prototyping (RP) technology can offer an excellent deliverable for various applications. Prototyping can be used for concept generation, ergonomic testing, test fitting, functional testing and even small-batch production.

There are various rapid prototyping technologies available for use including Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Stereolithography (STL), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), and 3D Printing. Each of these technologies has advantages and disadvantages.

Fused Deposition Modeling technology is marketed commercially by Stratasys, which also holds a trademark on the term. Like most other RP processes FDM works on an "additive" principle by laying down material in layers. A plastic filament or metal wire is unwound from a coil and supplies material to an extrusion nozzle which can turn on and off the flow. The nozzle is heated to melt the material and can be moved in both horizontal and vertical directions by a numerically controlled mechanism, directly controlled by a computer-aided design software package. In a similar manner to stereolithography, the model is built up from layers as the material hardens immediately after extrusion from the nozzle.

Stereolithography is an additive fabrication process utilizing a vat of liquid UV-curable photopolymer "resin" and a UV laser to build parts a layer at a time. On each layer, the laser beam traces a part cross-section pattern on the surface of the liquid resin. Exposure to the UV laser light cures, or, solidifies the pattern traced on the resin and adheres it to the layer below.

Selective laser sintering is an additive rapid manufacturing technique that uses a high power laser to fuse small particles of plastic, metal, ceramic, or glass powders into a mass representing a desired 3D object. The laser selectively fuses powdered material by scanning cross-sections generated from a 3D digital description of the part on the surface of a powder bed. After each cross-section is scanned, the powder bed is lowered by one layer thickness, a new layer of material is applied on top, and the process is repeated until the part is completed.

3D printing is a unique form of prototype creation that is rooted in traditional rapid printing technology. A three dimensional object is created by layering and connecting successive cross sections of material. 3D printers are generally faster, more affordable and easier to use than other additive fabrication technologies. While prototyping dominates current uses, 3D printing offers tremendous potential for retail consumer uses, especially because the cost of production is less than other methods, and the part build time is minimal. In the latest incarnations, 3D color printing is also available. This means that a part can be printed to represent the colors of the finished product, to show label concepts or requirements, or to indicate the results of stress analysis or other failure mode effects (FME) analysis.

For the most part, all rapid prototype systems require a 3D computer model to start the process. In most cases a significant amount of file preparation must be undertaken to get a file to generate a correct rapid prototype model.

As part of the innovation process, some companies may employ one or several rapid prototyping technologies in-house. However, being a new "cutting-edge" technology, many firms can make use of service bureaus to provide their rapid prototyping as the need becomes evident. Most service bureaus have detailed websites to market and serve their customers.

A handful of service bureaus are fairly large companies with numerous employees and locations. Many provide related services and technologies, such as tooling, industrial design, molding and production. However, service bureaus are typically small companies, and while they may be small, many of them are vertically integrated and can provide services from concept models to finished functional parts.

Service bureaus tend to specialize in one or more areas such injection molding, casting, etc. Examine a company's portfolio or case histories on their web pages, or discuss previous projects with the company to try to better understand areas of particular expertise. Sculptors have also used the technology to produce complex shapes for fine arts exhibitions.

In the near future, rapid prototype technology will become more widespread and pervade even to the home. For now though, for timely and expert delivery, the use of a service bureau is the best way for most innovative companies, individuals and organizations.

4 Wacky Treadmill Innovations - Will They Catch On?

There are a lot of cool - and downright wacky - treadmill innovations coming out these days. We decided to take a minute to look at four of them: the anti gravity treadmill, underwater treadmill, treadmill desk, and the treadmill bed.

Anti-Gravity Treadmill

Hands down, the anti-gravity treadmill is the most amusing thing you'll see in a treadmill concept, but unlike the other three we'll review here, this one isn't a joke: long distance runners are training with it and have made remarkable improvements in their times. It is also being used by professional sports teams to shorten the recovery time of injured players.

It works like this: The user puts on a pair of compression shorts which are made of thin neoprene material and resemble cycling shorts. The treadmill is inside a bubble containment unit. The user enters the chamber, the chest and head remain above or outside the top of the bubble. Air is pumped in and the Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill uses this air pressure to give the user the feeling they weigh up to 20 percent lighter. You feel lighter and can work out longer without getting tired. Your endurance improves and you can train 10-20% more in miles every week because the stress and fatigue on your muscles and frame is greatly reduced.

Verdict: Thumbs up on this machine. If you are training for the Olympics and your organization can pop for the $75,000 price tag, as Nike says, "Just Do It."

Underwater Treadmill

And now for something completely different: an underwater treadmill. This contraption looks more like something Houdini would have dreamed up: it's a see-through glass aquarium in which the user stands on a treadmill with a water level that covers the legs up to the knees, or as high as the waist. The user can control the water depth, belt speed, and jet resistance to increase the workout.

Talk about wacky treadmill innovations! Water exercises are great for rehabilitation because combining weightlessness while working flexing the joints of the body is beneficial. People have been walking around the shallow end of swimming pools to help combat circulatory troubles and diabetes for years. But in this case you will want to weigh the steep price tag, about $70,000, against the cost of getting a regular treadmill and hiring a contractor to build a small swimming pool in your back yard.

Verdict: Will the underwater treadmill catch on? No, not even if you're super-rich. The cons are that one could suffer a stroke and fall in the tank and drown; or worse, have a child drown in this thing. Or the glass could crack and leak all that water over your basement's carpet or floor. It also has to refill and dump water like a huge bath tub for each session so it's hardly environmentally friendly. But the number one reason not to buy an underwater treadmill: you do the same treadmill simulation exercises in the 3' end at a public pool. Thumbs down.

Treadmill Desk

The sitting treadmill desk is exactly what you picture it to be: a treadmill belt attached to a chair and a table-top workstation. A second version is the Walkstation which allows you to stand up and work on a laptop, or do whatever it is you do, while you move your feet and "walk" the belt. Somehow, writing financial reports while exercising just doesn't seem to be a good mix.

Basically, this is the ultimate in treadmill innovations for the multi-taker who wants to spend $6,500 on an inferior treadmill ... and then attached to an over-priced desk.

Verdict: How do you concentrate while writing an important paper? Or keep from breathing heavy into the phone during a sales pitch? We can see using a treadmill desk for occasional use, say while watching online videos and reading news and blogs, but not for working. With the Walkstation, there's no place to sit down, unless you put a chair on the belt at the desk, and how stupid does that look? And for the sitting treadmill, your legs are going through some motions but your butt is still carrying the weight of your body. Walking is a load-bearing exercise; sitting is sitting. We all are attracted to the notion of combining work with play but these desk treadmill innovations are a joke. Thumbs way down.

Treadmill Bed

This contraption has the same basic flaw as the treadmill desk; the legs and trunk muscles don't shoulder any weight during the "working out." The treadmill bed was designed as for physical therapy for the morbidly obese or those with muscular atrophy.

This is a bed that can be hydraulically inclined to allow the patient to achieve a full standing position without exertion or leaving the bed. The drawback is that the entire contraption is L-shaped: the treadmill stands erect at the foot of the bed when not in use, and the bed then provides full upright support when the treadmill is on the floor and the bed is in the air.

Verdict: Doesn't the bedding tumble down on top of the patient? Isn't it uncomfortable to be strapped in? We can imagine lots of problems with this thing, but since we don't work in rehab hospitals we can't comment on the issues with patient assistance should there be a power outage, hydraulics failure, or medical emergency. As far as treadmill innovations go, this one is a cautious thumbs sideways if it shows it has a useful purpose for the segment of society needing specialized PT.

A Net Promoter Scoresurvey asks one simple question, “Would you recommend us to a friend or colleague?” and is considered to be one of the most important indicators of a company’s success. The score is calculated by subtracting the percentage of “Detractors (scores of 0-6 out of 10) from Promoters (scores of 9 and 10).


5. Conduct Usability Testing – Usability Testing is an extremely useful way to see how a customer interacts with your product or website. There are firms for hire that can do this for you (more expensive) or you can put an ad on Craigslist or find acquaintances who can do it for a low price or even for free (less expensive.) For a few hundred dollars, you can find and prevent fallout points and customer roadblocks that can thwart hundreds of future customer service calls. For instance, you may need them to tidy up, bring their books to you, and gather round to listen. Get them to tidy up first. Then tell them to bring you their books. They get them to sit down.

By giving clear and simple instructions they can’t forget what they’re supposed to be doing and your life becomes instantly easier.

Tip 3 – Praise

We all love to be praised when we do well. Think how you feel when your headteacher praises you on a brilliant lesson they’ve observed. It’s fantastic!

Young children love praise more than anybody. So don’t be afraid to give it to them. In spades. New Innovations in Identity Theft Protection in Texas

Consumers are not the only ones concerned about and taking steps to protect against identity theft. Many states are taking important steps to protect their residents. A few of these steps include stiffer penalties, imposing sanctions and fines on careless companies and providing their residents with many tools necessary to correct the errors that identity theft has caused.

Many identity theft savvy consumers are: installing anti-spy ware, using shredders, reducing the use of their social security number, using services to stop junk mail and risky credit card applications. But what about the actions of others? After all the care you take to protect yourself, what happens when others, such as companies or service providers do not?

Businesses that have access to your information aren't always looking for you. It is far too easy to simply throw important personal information away, than to take the sometimes expensive steps needed to have it professionally disposed of. But many states are looking out for your best interest, especially when it comes to identity theft. Texas has a growing reputation for being proactive in preventing identity theft and tough on punishing businesses who don't protect the consumer. Texas law requires vendors to take specific precautions before disposing of personal documents that may include customers' bank accounts, driver's license and Social Security numbers. In the state of Texas, you can bet companies will be thinking twice before dumping your credit application in a public trash can.

Examples of Poor Business Practices:

Public trash cans outside a local Radio Shack were filled with thousands of customer's sensitive personal and credit information after the dumping of these documents. Credit applications containing names, social security numbers, debit and credit card numbers as well as addresses and telephone numbers and receipts were located, exposing many Radio Shack Consumers to identity theft or credit card fraud.

After investigations by the State of Texas Attorney General's office, a settlement was reached. Under the settlement with Radio-Shack, the retailer is required to enhance security procedures and implement employee training. Radio Shack also agreed to unannounced compliance audits in all Texas stores bi-annually.

Select Medical was investigated after a report that over 4,000 documents were found in the garbage behind their Select Physical Therapy Location. These un-shredded records included bank account numbers, drug testing results, insurance verification sheets as well as sensitive social and vocational therapy questionnaires. Select Medical will also be required to amend security procedures and implement training for Texas employees about the newly established state laws governing customer record disposal. The insurance forms are of particular concern in light of the growing trend of medical identity theft, in which an individuals' insurance information is used to obtain medical services or to commit insurance fraud.

Under the settlement agreement, the state of Texas will receive nearly $1.5 million in fines, including attorney's fees. As outlined in the Identity Theft and Protection Act, the remainder will be used for the investigation and prosecution of future cases of identity theft.

Stiff penalties are just one of the steps taken to protect and prevent identity theft. The Texas Attorney General's Office has created a checklist for victims of identity theft to take steps and track their progress during recovery. The identity theft check list includes information and forms on: closing all fraudulent accounts made in your name, contacting the 3 major credit reporting agencies and requesting a fraud alert or security freeze for new accounts, reporting identity theft crimes for local law enforcement and obtaining a copy of the police report, and reporting identity theft crimes to Federal Trade Commission and completing and ID Theft Affidavit. Victims are also advised to file a consumer complaint with the Office of the Attorney General in the event that they are harassed by credit collectors as a result of identity theft. Additionally The Texas Attorney General's Office also offers an Identity Theft Victim's Kit.

According to 2006 state statistics on identity theft, Texas ranks fourth in the area of identity theft. States are ranked according to victims per 100,000 people, and it should be noted that Texas also has a higher population than many other states. The top ten states with the Most Victims of Identity Theft Per Capita are: Arizona, Nevada, California, Texas, Florida, Colorado, Georgia, New York, Washington, and New Mexico.

Just because your state did not make the top ten list, doesn't mean you are safe. No matter where you live, this crime is a real problem. Information, advocacy, laws and prosecutions in any state will ultimately help everyone but in the mean time consumers must educate themselves and arm themselves with protection against identity theft as well as the remedies available to them. With the continued efforts of law enforcement, state and federal agencies, stiffer fines and penalties as well as requiring a higher standard of care from businesses, progress is being made on many levels in protecting consumers.

On Tuesday November 7th, The Cleveland Clinic, ranked as the third best hospital in America by U.S. News & World Report, published its list of the top ten medical breakthroughs impacting healthcare in 2007.

The list’s up-and-coming devices and therapies were selected by a panel of Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists.

Although we all think of a "top ten list" as a gimmick of comedian David Letterman, terms like "neurostimulation and "endografting" tells the reader that this a very serious list published by one of the prestigious healthcare institutions in the world. The list includes therapies for cancer, asthma, depression, heart failure, age-related macular degeneration, and vascular disease. But in David Letterman style here are the top ten medical innovations expected to have a major impact on our health in 2007:

10. Convection-enhanced delivery of drugs: An emerging drug delivery method used to administer medication directly to the site where it is needed, without exposing the rest of the body to a drug’s effects.

9. Left Ventricular Assist System (LVAS): An implantable device that helps the left side of the heart push blood to the aorta, the body’s main blood vessel. The breakthrough is that the device also senses when to increase or decrease the rate of blood flow.

8. Targeted cancer therapies: Using cell growth inhibitors to treat cancers, such as renal cell carcinoma, the most common type of kidney cancer.

The Politics of Innovation - Wising Up to the Gatekeepers

Organisations are filled with politics and organisational games. Here are just a few that are common culprits for stifling innovation.

An interesting idea

In a mild form, resistance can be as simple as declaring that "I thought the ideas in your presentation were really interesting". "Interesting" is the key word here, because it is the word people frequently use when they want to appear supportive and positive about an idea when really they are indirectly resisting. We say "interesting" when asked for feedback and we do not want to reveal our concerns and doubts. "Interesting" can even be a euphemism for "your ideas are rubbish and I will not support them".

Another Time

This is the tactic of resisting an idea or suggestion by pretending that the timing just isn't right (and at the same time implying that at some future, unspecified date the timing may be better) "The only thing wrong with your idea is the timing, come back in the New Year and we will take another look" This usually means "no way is this idea going any further!" Of course, the timing may genuinely be bad but often this tactic is used for sabotaging ideas that someone does not want to see implemented (out of political self interest).

More Information

This is the tactic of deliberately stalling a valid suggestion by continuously demanding more information, hoping that the other party will eventually drop the idea, or forget it. It is entirely reasonable that before new ideas are acted upon, that they should be researched and tested. It is good practice for competent managers to ensure that bright new ideas do not propel organisations into oblivion but this can go too far. This is a convincing, 'professional' and deliberate viewpoint that hides genuine resistance.

The Wise One

They have seen it all and done it all before, and with their vast experience we would be foolish to ignore their protestations when they say it is a poor idea and won't work. We face an uphill struggle against arrogance and ego, it is them or us! Note the key to disarming such a person is that their wisdom is rooted in the past. Times change.

Techno-Babble

The idea is challenged on the scientific level and the resistance takes the form of long winded, confusing, jargon filled explanations which are presented as just being "helpful". They have seen it all before (and have a pile of facts to prove it) and see no new reason to go down a road which has already proved fruitless.

One recognised, these ploys can often be countered or you may just choose another course of action rather than waste your valuable energy.

Thatch Roofing - Innovations in Fire Protection

If one look at the quote above one can deduct that there has not been a lot of innovations in the thatching industry, there has however been huge advances in the fire protection of the thatching material. Modern laying techniques also eliminate the exaggerated fire risk that many people fear regarding thatch. Nowadays various fire blankets are placed in between the thatch and with the correct compaction the fire risk is virtually eliminated and with the use of lightning conductors, thatch is no longer the hazardous material of the past.

• PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

Lightning protection

Lightning conductors should always be installed to protect the thatched buildings. For single masts the angle of protection is 45° from the highest point downwards and one should make sure that the whole roof is covered by at least one meter above the roof of the building. For a high risk zone of lightning for example on sloping ground or on a hill, the angle of protection is only 30° from the highest point downwards along the pole and naturally the lightning conductor will have to be a lot taller or multiple conductors can be installed. When more than one lightning conductor is installed, the angle of protection between them is 60° from their highest points downwards along the poles.

Binding

For lightning protection purposes, it is strongly recommended that galvanized steel wire should not be used for binding the thatch, and rather a suitable natural material should be used. Poplar and wattle sticks are commonly used and some use cane or thatch strands. Tar treated string should not be used for binding as this can create a fuse-like effect in the event of fire.

Chimneys

Chimney stacks should be constructed in such away that the outer faces in contact with the thatch do not become hot. A full brick thickness (220 mm) is normally sufficient to satisfy this requirement. All mortar joints in the stack must be properly filled. The top of the stack must extend to at least 1m above the highest point of roof and a spark arrestor, (stainless steel wire mesh), fitted close to the top, covering the full width of the flue, must be built into the flue around the edges to prevent sparks flying out and possibly ignite the roof.

Cabling & Services

Electrical power supply and telephone cables should enter the building by means of underground ducts, and all electrical wiring in the roof space should be run in screwed metal conduit, with all junction boxes properly sealed.

Refuse

Combustible material should not be allowed to accumulate near the house. A number of thatched roofs have, in the past, been set on fire as a result of the burning of garden refuse in the vicinity.

Adjacent buildings

Sufficient space must be allowed between buildings to prevent fire spreading to the thatched building from adjacent buildings and vice versa. Some countries' regulations calls for at least a 15m distance between the building and its plot boundary line.

• REDUCTION OF COMBUSTIBILITY

Fire retardant chemicals

Many fire retardant chemicals are available these days that can be applied to thatch by immersion or spraying, but as these chemicals are generally water soluble they are, in time, largely washed out by rain as they do not penetrate the material but only form a surface coating.
A lot of exposure to the sun will also gradually evaporate the chemicals and might leave the top layer unprotected.

Fire resistant blankets

A protective, noncombustible membrane can be laid under the thatching grass to act as a blanket preventing the spread of fire between the thatch layers. Materials that are generally used for such a purpose is aluminum, building paper or glass fibre. The disadvantage of such a measure in warm, humid or high rainfall areas is that because of the impervious membrane or blanket, air flow between the thatch is restricted and will enhance the growth of destructive fungi. To allow air flow through the thatch to avoid fungi growth the chosen membrane should be sufficiently perforated.

• FIRE FIGHTING FACILITIES

Soaking with water

Perforated horizontal pipes can be provided on each side of and running parallel to the ridge, controlled by stop taps at ground level. The pipes can be of galvanized steel or copper, perforated with holes at sufficient intervals along the length of the pipe to discharge water over the roof surface in the event of fire. Alternatively a horizontal pipe may be run inside the roof at the ridge, with 'spreaders' protruding through the thatch at sufficient intervals. Such installations can be used to soak the thatch in the event of a fire risk. A high rate of water discharge is needed for this to be effective and will not be able to run of a domestic water supply. Special arrangement will need to be made with the local council for such an installation.

Other

There are two schools of thought about the value of swimming pools as a source of water supply for fire fighting. Some local authorities consider that a pool can be useful if located near enough to the house and with unrestricted access for the fire brigade.

However, some specialist organizations believe that thatch burns so rapidly that the fire brigade can rarely reach the scene before the fire has got a hold and that initial use of water from the brigade's unit tanks would be quicker than using a swimming pool supply.

A long-handled metal rake should be provided in an easily accessible place, for pulling down smoldering thatch from the roof. The handle may be fitted with a suitable clip to which the nozzle of the hose pipe may be attached, thus improving the reach of the jet.

Even when all these precautions have been taken, the occupant of a thatched house must always exercise care when handling open fires in or near the house e.g. when preparing for a bbq or burning garden refuse or if fireworks are being discharged in the vicinity.
