Oslo Silver 2.0 Twin Stopwatch and Countdown Timer
This is a great, inexpensive stopwatch. I like to have a stopwatch laying around my desk at work for impromptu measurements. Because I work in a cubicle environment, having something like this that isn't valuable enough to steal but still works perfectly is a big plus.
If all you're doing is measuring lap times, I can't see why you'd pay a penny more for anything else.
This is a good product that works well and is pretty easy to use. It comes with a convenient cord for hanging around your neck, in case you're going to use it as a stop watch at sporting events.
The size did surprise me when I opened the box. I didn't really expect it to be as large as it is, but that could play either way. The larger size could be bad if you carry a lot of junk in your pockets and expected to put it there, on the other hand though, it is a real advantage if you want a timer that is easy to see and easy to read, even the hundredths of a second. Oslo: Silver 2.0 Combines a multi-mode Stopwatch with an easy-to-use Countdown Timer. Oslo Silver 2.0 Twin Stopwatch and Countdown Timer
- Chrome Sonic Whistle with Black Lanyard
- Timex T5G811 Marathon Stopwatch
- Sportline Walking Advantage 232 Countdown Stopwatch
- Fox 40 Pearl with Fingergrip
- ACCUSPLIT Survivor Stopwatch with Clock and Extra-Large Display

20 Tips To Initiate & Inspire Innovation, From Your Strategic Thinking Business Coach
The word innovation appears frequently in advertisements, positioning statements, branding, marketing, mission statements and is used by most businesses and organizations in some fashion or form. But the question is how many businesses and organizations really make innovation a top priority? And how many businesses and organizations are truly good at innovation? One recent AMA/HRI study found that although most organizations say that innovation is a top priority, few companies are actually good at it.
Your Strategic Thinking Business Coach wants to know whether you have been asked and tasked to innovate within your company or organization? And the follow-up question is are you having difficulty getting started and achieving results? I suspect that many readers of this article have experienced or witnessed that one of the biggest issues with innovation is that they really are not sure just where to start. So, with that in mind, Your Strategic Thinking Business Coach offers the following list of twenty (20) tips to inspire and initiate innovation for you and your business.
Innovation Tip #1: Develop a clearly defined and focused vision for innovation within your business.
Innovation Tip #2: Develop a set of measurable goals that will clearly define what you want and need to get out of innovation.
Innovation Tip #3: Develop a system for tracking and managing innovation.
Innovation Tip #4: Develop and implement a forum for sharing. Promote the open exchange of ideas and collaboration among your co-workers and team members. The forum could be face-to-face meetings or dong so online with message boards or blogs.
Innovation Tip #5: Engage the powerful technique of brainstorming. The power of brainstorming enables you to address a business challenge, issue or opportunity and is effective because it sets no boundaries and allows people to say whatever they want.
Innovation Tip #6: Consider establishing an Innovation Team whose priority is ensuring that innovation is a priority and that there is a clearly defined and focused effort to achieve innovation in your business.
Innovation Tip #7: Research what others, outside your organization, do to initiate & inspire innovation. Set a goal to identify 3 or 4 organizations that are very innovative and then request visits to those companies to gain new perspectives on innovation.?
Innovation Tip #8: Commit to personally doing something different from your ordinary routine. For example: try a new coffee house for your morning coffee; take a different route to work; try a new menu item; or anything that you would not typically do on a daily basis.
Innovation Tip #9: Find a business coach or mentor and learn something from them.
Innovation Tip #10: Develop a proactive approach to generating new ideas. Create a list of questions/challenges you can pose to your team. This will enable you to make innovation specific and proactive and consequently have it achieve more Top Of Mind Awareness (TOMA) and yield more strategically relevant ideas.?
Innovation Tip #11: Create some momentum for innovation in your business by selecting and committing to a project that will result in a “quick win” and will provide confirmation that innovation does produce positive results.
Innovation Tip #12: Create a sense of urgency by setting an aggressive timetable for a project.
Innovation Tip #13: Reward creativity and innovation in personal and creative ways. Develop rewards that will appeal personally to an individual’s interests and values.
Innovation Tip #14: Create and foster an environment that is fun and challenging. Creative people have tendencies toward being irreverent and like to have fun.
Innovation Tip #15: Break down individual isolation and create opportunities for people to bounce ideas off of each other. Encourage (or force if necessary), people out of their workstations and offices to meet in small groups to discuss challenges, issues, trends, opportunities and threats, etc.
Innovation Tip #16: Breakdown hierarchy and emphasize and reward creative and innovative ideas regardless of where they come from in your business.
Innovation Tip #17: Create an environment that will allow everyone to speak freely when working with his or her teams.
Innovation Tip #18: Aim for simplicity so that the innovative ideas are easy to understand, easy to explain to others and relatively easy to implement.
Innovation Tip #19: Focus on the action or the experience and use verbs rather than nouns (e.g. “teach people to think strategically” rather than “strategic thinking education”).
Innovation Tip #20: Adopt an attitude that you will view mistakes and failures as great learning opportunities and blessings in disguise.

Walt Disney World's Top Tables
Image : http://www.flickr.com
With so many choices, it’s difficult to decide where to spend your dining dollars at Walt Disney World. Hopefully this list will narrow the field a bit for you.
Best For Families
Coral Reef Restaurant – Kid’s feel like the Little Mermaid at this one-of-a-kind dining room where just a trident’s throw away is Epcot’s Living Seas’ 6-million-gallon aquarium rife with coral reefs and sea life. And adults feel like Poseidon after just one bite of the restaurant’s stellar seafood and the oh-so-delicious pepper jack cheese grits.
50’s Prime Time Café – What kid doesn’t want to experience life way back when. They’ll get a fun dose of it at this Disney-MGM Studios’ restaurant. Dine on savory renditions of good old American comfort food watching Leave it to Beaver and Topper on black and white TVs sitting on the counter between the toaster and the blender. “Mom” herself is your server, making sure everyone in the “family” observes good manners.
Whispering Canyon Café – Honest-to-goodness, rib-stickin’ barbecued vittles served piping hot in an iron skillet is right up a wannabe cowboy’s alley at this fun-loving restaurant at the Wilderness Lodge. Come prepared for plenty of hootin’ and hollerin’ and please, whatever you do, don’t ask for the ketchup unless, that is, you like a lot of attention.
Best to Book Ahead For
California Grill - This sensational restaurant at the Contemporary Resort should be at the top of every visitors list. From exemplary sushi to the exceptional New American cuisine to sensational desserts and the outstanding California wine list each available by the glass, this place has it all. From its lofty heights diners can see the Magic Kingdom, the sparkling Seven Seas Lagoon, and, best of all, a picture-perfect view of the Wishes fireworks. Just try to time your meal around the fireworks and head outside to the super observation platform for a bird’s-eye view of the extravaganza.
Cinderella’s Royal Table – If there was ever a place to plan ahead for, this is it. Exactly 180 days prior to the anticipated day, countless parents rise at the crack of dawn to be one of the first to call for dining reservations. All just to insure that their darling little ones will be among the lucky few to be seated high atop Cinderella’s Castle at the Magic Kingdom. If you don’t snag a reservation your children will never forgive you.
Victoria and Albert’s – Demand is high for this fantastic dining spot at the Grand Floridian Resort. Once you’ve secured your spot, just sit back and prepare to be wowed by tables set in Wedgewood china, Christofle silver, Frette linens, and Riedel crystal, and cuisine that will knock your socks off.
Best For Vegetarians
Victoria and Albert’s– Here is one place that vegetarians won’t feel short changed. A seven-course vegetarian menu, expertly overseen by the illustrious Chef de Cuisine Scott Hunnell, is offered nightly. It can’t get much better than that.
Boma - The essence of Africa is potent beneath Boma’s circular, thatched roof where hearty foods prepared with an African flair (and a dash of American cuisine for the picky eater) are the fare. An entire section (or pod) of meatless dishes with such items like vegetable lentil kofta, braised greens, vegetable skewers, and several kinds of exotic salads are par for the course.
Best Character Dining
Crystal Palace - Winnie the Pooh, and his friends, Eeyore, Piglet, and Tigger are your hosts in a sunlight-drenched, conservatory-style restaurant found at the castle end of Main Street in the Magic Kingdom. Here you’ll find a surprisingly good and bountiful buffet, definitely one of the better spreads in the park.
1900 Park Fare – At this popular spot at the Grand Floridian Resort is Mary Poppins, Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Alice in Wonderland, and the Mad Hatter for breakfast; in the evening hours the characters from Cinderella are in attendance. And the food is perhaps Disney’s best buffet.
Akershus Royal Banquet Hall - Those who love the idea of ethnic dining should try this atypical one housed at Epcot in a replica of Oslo’s Akershus Castle. Disney Princesses are in attendance at all meals and may include Belle, Ariel, Cinderella, Jasmine, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Mary Poppins.
Best Wine List
Citricos – This Mediterranean influenced restaurant at the Grand Floridian Resort is rightly proud of its global wine list, a Wine Spectator Restaurant Award winner. On the menu you’ll find a suggested wine to accompany each course.
Jiko – At the Animal Kingdom Lodge’s signature dining room you can order from the most extensive list of South African wines this side of Johannesburg. Also a Wine Spectator Restaurant Award winner, more than 65 of South Africa's boutique wineries showcase their vintages here.
California Grill – As if the spectacular food and the mind-boggling view isn’t enough, the outstanding California wine list is also exceptional with 100 wines offered by the glass.
Victoria and Albert’s – Yet again this, Disney’s most acclaimed restaurant, makes the cut, and has the distinction of being Disney’s only restaurant to receive the coveted Wine Spectator “Best of Award of Excellence”, with 700 selections on the menu and 4,200 bottles in its cellar.
Best Hip Scene
Todd English’s Bluezoo - There’s plenty of buzz surrounding this dreamy outpost at the Walt Disney World Dolphin where it’s worth the cost of dinner just to check out the stunning, underwater-like fantasyland dining room adorned with air bubble light fixtures, shimmery silver-blue organza curtains, and carpeting mimicking an expanding drop of water. But if dinner isn’t in your plans, the lounge here is just as cool where martinis and a raw bar are on order.
Raglan Road - It’s easy to imagine you’re in the heart of Dublin at Raglan Road, Downtown Disney’s newest restaurant and pub. Come in for a drink, a snack, or for a meal… whatever, just don’t miss this fantastic spot. Irish musicians provide authentic entertainment accompanied by delicious, contemporary Irish cuisine.

Top 5 Things to Do in Singapore
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Here are the top 5 things to do in Singapore if you are just there for a few days:
1. Go straight to People's Park Complex in Chinatown. This is the first high-rise shopping center in Southeast Asia and you can experience the local flavor. You can even get a foot reflexology treatment for $10 and then spend time picking up cheap but good souvenirs.
2. Take a guided walking tour to see the real Singapore. You can explore ethnic neighborhoods like Little India or Arab Street, find Chinese medicines, see temples and architecture or head to the island's famous black and white bungalows, which are vestiges of the colonial rule from a century ago. A private walking tour can cost up to S$100 an hour per group.
3. If you are not afraid of heights and do not suffer from vertigo, take a ride on Singapore Flyer which opened in March 2008 on the Marina Bay. It is dubbed as the world's tallest Ferris wheel at 540 feet.
4. Go and see the 3,000 odd animals that roam freely in open-style areas in Singapore Zoo. This is the closest you will ever get to a real safari. You can see animals like elephants, kangaroos, lions and giraffes in their nearly-natural environment.
5. You cannot say you have experienced Singapore unless you taste the local cuisine. The best place for soup dumplings is Paragon Mall. This is the place where the locals flock to so that they can eat affordable and authentic Singaporean food. You can sample everything at the hawker center ranging from chicken rice to chili crab to popiah spring rolls to spicy Malay coconut milk to laksa. The hawker center is located on the Esplanade Mall and is just steps from the Merlion statue.

Singapore Women At Their Best
Image : http://www.flickr.com
One might think that the women of Singapore would be similar to other Asian women. However, upon giving the cultures a second look, most are surprised to know that Singapore women are quite independent. In fact, this is one thing many Western men find very attractive, although it does seem to annoy the more traditional men of Singapore quite a bit.
Singapore women today are more focused on education and their career. They are not rushing into marriages at young ages and are waiting later in life to have children. Some people think this is a huge mistake and worry about the culture of Singapore declining as a result. In fact, they often blame the Western world for influencing their young women to be more independent.
The truth is that women in Singapore are just not as interested in getting married anymore. If they are not married and have started a family by the age of 30, they will never likely do it. At that age, they are already in an established career and would have to give so much up to have the family they may not even want to have. So, they are using their rights to choose not to marry.
Strong character is one of the most attractive features of today’s Singapore women. They are even entering the world of politics and are being welcomed with open arms by most of the male politicians. These women know that they need to act like equals to men in order to be seen as equals and are willing to sacrifice to do so.

From Third World to First: The Singapore Story: 1965-2000
Lee also describes one of his most controversial proposals: tax breaks and schooling incentives to encourage educated men and women to marry each other and have children. "Our best women were not reproducing themselves because men who were their educational equals did not want to marry them.... This lopsided marriage and procreation pattern could not be allowed to remain unmentioned and unchecked," writes Lee. Most of the book, however, is a chronicle of how Lee helped create so much material prosperity. Anticommunism is a strong theme throughout, and Lee comments broadly on international politics. He is cautiously friendly toward the United States, chastising it for a "dogmatic and evangelical" foreign policy that scolds other countries for human-rights violations, except when they interfere with American interests, "as in the oil-rich Arabian peninsula." Even so, he writes, "the United States is still the most benign of all the great powers.... [and] all noncommunist countries in East Asia prefer America to be the dominant weight in the power balance of the region." From Third World to First is not the most gripping book imaginable, but it is a vital document about a fascinating place in a time of profound transition. --John J. Miller read more

Singapore - Culture Smart!: the essential guide to customs & culture
I didn't find this book particularly useful - the information was pretty straightforward and very general. Wouldn't recommend - you can get all this cultural info online with a bit of research.
I gave this four stars instead of five since the section on business custom does not describe how business women should dress and behave in Singapore. There's the passing remark that women should only initiate handshakes when one is introduced to a (presumably male) colleague; otherwise, there is nothing about how to dress or behave when working in Singapore. Can we wear pants? or must we wear skirts?
The chapter about dining etiquette and entertaining was fascinating. I'll keep this around for my upcoming trip but only wish that it was a bit more helpful on the distaff side. : Culture Smart! provides essential information on attitudes, beliefs and behavior in different countries, ensuring that you arrive at your destination aware of basic manners, common courtesies, and sensitive issues. These concise guides tell you what to expect, how to behave, and how to establish a rapport with your hosts. This inside knowledge will enable you to steer clear of embarrassing gaffes and mistakes, feel confident in unfamiliar situations, and develop trust, friendships, and successful business relationships.
Culture Smart! offers illuminating insights into the culture and society of a particular country. It will help you to turn your visit-whether on business or for pleasure-into a memorable and enriching experience. Contents include
* customs, values, and traditions
* historical, religious, and political background
* life at home
* leisure, social, and cultural life
* eating and drinking
* do's, don'ts, and taboos
* business practices
* communication, spoken and unspoken
"Culture Smart has come to the rescue of hapless travellers." Sunday Times Travel
"... the perfect introduction to the weird, wonderful and downright odd quirks and customs of various countries." Global Travel
"...full of fascinating-as well as common-sense-tips to help you avoid embarrassing faux pas." Observer
"...as useful as they are entertaining." Easyjet Magazine
"...offer glimpses into the psyche of a faraway world." New York Times

Best Things to Pack When Taking a Cruise Vacation
Image : http://www.flickr.com
When taking a cruise it is important to know how to pack because sometimes the cabin can be a tight fit. When you are preparing your suitcase to set sail make sure you bring a good assortment of the right clothes.
First you want to start by checking the weather forecast in the area you will be cruising. Most weather sites allow you to check the weather for 10 days out so you will know the weather during your excursion.
It is important to decide whether you are going to stay on board a lot of the time or get off when you get to port. If you like the pool and laying in the sun then you want to make sure that you bring several bathing suits and cover ups. If you are going to get off make sure you pack a pair of comfortable walking shoes and leave the flip flops on board.
Make sure that if you plan on eating in the dining room that you bring some dress casual clothes because you will want to be allowed in the dining room for diner. Also there will be one or two formal night aboard the cruise so make sure that you find out ahead of time what the attire is.
Make sure that when you are packing for a cruise that you check with the cruise line first because they will have a recommended list of things to wear. And as always on a cruise you need to enjoy your surroundings and take full advantage of all the cruise has to offer.

Melbourne Tours - 5 Day-Trips You Must Take From Melbourne
Image : http://www.flickr.com
Melbourne is lucky in that it has an amazing variety of landscapes within a 1-2 hour drive - giving you a lot of choice when planning Melbourne tours or day trips. You can explore the gold rush days, go on a luxury winery tour, surf a world famous beach or bushwalk in a stunning National Park.
Here is a selection of Melbourne tours to get you started:
- A popular day trip is to the Dandenong Ranges, about 1 hour east of Melbourne.
The drive through the Dandenongs is stunning because of its tall mountain ash forests, fern gullies and temperate rain forests - feels like in a fairy tale. Mountain ash can reach a height of 110m and driving or walking through a whole forest of these is awe-inspiring.
The other attractions of the Dandenongs are the small villages - I recommend Sassafras - with quirky art and craft shops, and intimate cafes and restaurants. - For a bit of class, go on a Yarra Valley Wine tour. The Yarra Valley is only an hour's drive NE of Melbourne.
The scenery and colors around Melbourne are unique - much more intense than in most parts of Australia. You get lush greens, illuminated by golden light - particularly when the sun breaks through on cloudy days.
Apart from stunning scenery, there are many good quality wineries in the Yarra Valley. A great place to go for wine tasting, lunch, art galleries or a balloon flight over the valley! I also recommend Healesville Sanctury, a native animal park in a natural setting. - North of Melbourne is the famous Hanging Rock - a stunning rock configuration, forming the top of a mountain.
Hanging Rock is famous for the mysterious vanishing of a group of school girls and their teacher in 1900. Just by climbing through the rock formations you get involved in that mystery. It has been subject to a novel and Peter Weir film.
From there it is not far to Daylesford. Daylesford is a gold mining town with character - associated with Swiss-Italians and the mineral springs. It has been a spa resort area from the late 1880's and is still a place for romantic getaways and pampering yourself. - Driving from Melbourne towards the NW, you find the gold rush town of Ballarat. Ballarat was the centre of the gold rush craze, oozing money and riches. Grand Victorian and Edwardian Heritage buildings and tree-lined avenues can take you back to its 19th century glory days.
Ballarat's most famous attraction is Sovereign Hill, a 35-acre open-air museum recreating the gold mining heydays, including old buildings, actors in authentic costumes engaged in 1850s activities. - Well worth a day trip, and great for kids as well. - A list of Melbourne tours is not complete without a visit to the beach. There are surf beaches on either side of Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay. A great day trip is towards the SW, to Torquay. This is where the surfing championships are held at Bells Beach.
However, you don't have to be a surfer to enjoy the beaches. It is a popular day trip for Melburnians wanting to hit the waves. It is also the gateway to a greater Melbourne tour of the Great Ocean Road
This is only the beginning of a long list of Melbourne tours.
I still have to tell you about the Great Ocean Road, the Grampians, the Mornington Peninsula, the Penguins on Phillip Island the Victorian High Country, Wilsons Prom...
Warm regards,
Brigitte Seum

Symptoms of Ovulation? 5 Common Ovulation Symptoms For Getting Pregnant
Image : http://www.flickr.com
If you know what to look for the symptoms of ovulation are very easy to spot. Ovulation usually occurs 12-16 days after the first day of your last period. During ovulation your body will make some slight changes such as a change in vaginal secretions, slight cramping, elevated body temp, and sometimes it may be accompanied by some very light spotting. You have most likely seen or felt these changes before but paid no attention to them, as they are very subtle in nature. Noticing these changes are not difficult you just need to pay close attention to your body.
The first step to noticing changes in your body is to know your body very well; this is usually extremely simple for women as we are very intuitive by nature Just another plus of being a woman. The first symptom of ovulation is your vaginal secretions will increase and become almost the consistency of raw egg whites, this occurs because of a change in hormones.
Two to three days before ovulation you will notice this increase of clear slippery vaginal discharge, during these days you are fertile but, the last day of the vaginal discharge you are most fertile. This is because it is on this last day of discharge or the day after, that ovulation actually occurs. Remember, sperm can live up to five days in the vagina so even if you have not ovulated having intercourse on these days is very beneficial.
The second symptom of ovulation is slight cramping; this cramping you may feel is often called mittelschmerz which means middle pain in German. Middle pain is usually felt on the side you're ovulating on. This is caused by the release and movement of the unfertilized egg down the fallopian tube. For me this is not a constant pain it is usually just one of those "ouch what was that?" and then it is gone however, and this may occur several times during the day.
Pain associated with ovulation may occur every month but, for some reason usually occurs every third month. In most women the pain disappears within 6 to 8 hours but, can persist for 24 to 48 hours. You may also experience nausea, bloating, frequent urination, and pain during intercourse however, this is uncommon.
It is at this time you may also notice a slight pink tint in the vaginal secretions, don't worry this is completely normal. These signs and symptoms may vary from woman to woman but, one way to surely tell is to check your basal body temperature. After ovulation a woman's basal body temperature will rise 0.4-1 degrees.
As well as the symptoms listed here, many women report that during this time they actually have an increased desire to have sex. This is simply your body's way of making sure all of its hard work does not go to waste. After all you know what they say it takes two to tango!
I know this may seem like a lot to take in right now but, in the long run becoming more familiar with your body and all its working structures will not only help you identify the symptoms of ovulation but, can also help you get pregnant in the shortest period of time.
That's all I have space for right now, put I've listed even more symptoms of ovulation on my site, along with recommendations for regulating your periods, ovulation and getting pregnant fast. You can get these fertility tips and more at http://www.ovulationetc.com/symptoms

Top Ten Reason To Get A Portable Trade Show Booth
Having been in the convention business for the last ten years I've seen many new innovations in trade show booths . By far my most favorite innovation is the portable trade show booth. The kind that you can roll on a stroller and set-up in an hour or so - all by yourself. Having said that - here are the top ten reasons why you should get a portable trade show booth.
1. Easily shipped from country to country (the booth is usually in a tubular suitcase that weighs about 50kg or roughly 110 lbs)
2. It is packed in its own suitcase and it has rollers (enough said)
3. No hassles with local suppliers ( planning, approval of design, execution, language barriers)
4. No - touch ups
5. Modular and expandable - you can actually bring one portable trade show booth ( which pops up to a standard 3 x 3 ) or bring two for two 3x3 booths
6. Easy slide -in graphics - just slide your signage on the slots provided
7. "Cool factor" - everybody talks about your booth
8. Cost-effective - if you do a lot of conventions your portable booth will pay itself off in 8 conventions
9. Up-gradable - some booth companies will offer upgrades on your booth at a very affordable price
10. Great warranty - 4 year warranty on service and parts
All in all I have been to over 78 conventions with my trusty portable trade show booth and it has been always a good experience - no-stress, easy assembly, no other suppliers or contractors to talk to. The weight is no problem as the rollers on the suitcase is very efficient. I highly recommend any serial-conventioner -goer to grab a portable trade show booth

Six Great Ways to Ruin a Brainstorm
The brainstorm (or ideation or thought shower) is the most popular group creativity exercise in business. It is quick, easy and it works. But many organizations have become frustrated with brainstorms and have stopped using them. They say brainstorms are old-fashioned and no longer effective. But the real reason for the frustrations is that the brainstorms are not facilitated properly. A well-run brainstorm is fun and energetic. It will generate plenty of good ideas. But a poor brainstorm can be frustrating and demotivational. Let's look at some simple ways to ruin your next brainstorm meeting.
1. Having no clear objectives
A brainstorm with a vague or unclear purpose will wander and lose its way. So set a clear objective. The purpose of the brainstorm is to generate many creative ideas to answer a specific goal. It is best to express the goal as a question. A wooly objective is not helpful. 'How can we do better?' is not as good as 'How can we double sales in the next 12 months?' However, the parameters of the questions should not be too detailed or it can close out lateral possibilities. 'How can we double sales, through existing channels and with the current product set?' is probably too constrained. Once the question has been agreed it is written up clearly for all to see.
It is worth setting objectives for the number of ideas to be generated and the time to be spent. 'We are looking to generate 60 ideas in the next 20 minutes. Then we will whittle them down to 4 or 5 really good ones.' The brainstorm should not be too long - between 25 and 35 minutes is generally best.
2. Too homogenous a group
If everyone is from the same department then creativity can be inhibited and you may get 'group think'. Choose the group carefully. The best size is somewhere between six and twelve. Too few people and there are not enough diverse inputs. Too many people and it is hard to control and retain everyone's commitment. Sprinkle the group with a few outsiders from other areas or even from outside the business - people who can bring some different perspectives and wacky ideas. A good mix of people - young and old, men and women works best.
3. Letting the boss act as facilitator
Beware of having an autocratic boss with his or her team. They can inhibit or shape the discussion. It is better for them not to be there at all but if they are then a good independent facilitator is essential - someone who can encourage input from everyone and stop one person from dominating. The worst formula for a brainstorm is generally the department manager leading the department and acting as scribe and censor at the same time.
4. Allowing early criticism
The most important rule of brainstorming is - suspend judgment. In order to encourage a wealth of wacky ideas it is essential that no one is critical, negative or judgmental about an idea. Any idea that is uttered - no matter how stupid - must be written down. The rule about suspending judgement during the idea generation phase is so important that it is worth enforcing rigorously. A good technique is to issue water pistols; anyone who is critical gets squirted.
5. Settling for a few ideas.
Don't get a handful of ideas and then start analyzing. Quantity is great. The more ideas the better. Brainstorming is one the few activities in life where quantity improves quality. Think of it as a Darwinian process. The more separate ideas that are generated the greater the chance that some will be fit enough to survive. You need stacks of energy and buzz driving lots of wacky ideas. Crazy thoughts that are completely unworkable are often the springboards for other ideas that can be adapted into great new solutions. So keep the crazy ideas coming - you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find one prince!
6. No closure or follow through.
Don't stop the meeting after generating lots of ideas with a vague promise to follow up. If people see no real outcomes they will become frustrated with the process and lose faith.
You should quickly analyze the ideas at the meeting. One of the best ways is to quickly go through them and to perform a triage. Divide the proposals into three categories - promising interesting or reject. If any of the promising ideas are real no-brainers - so good that they should be implemented straight away then give them to someone as an action item immediately.
You should categorize and collect the ideas. On a separate flipchart write all the promising and interesting ideas which are marketing ideas say and on another chart all the sales ideas etc. This process of rearranging the ideas can help you see new combinations and possibilities. Some people use post it notes at this stage so that they can easily move ideas around.
If you are pressed for time and do not want to go through all the ideas with the triage then an alternative method of selecting the best ideas is to give everyone 10 points. They can allocate points to their favorite ideas in any way that they want. They can give one point to ten separate ideas or all ten to one idea. Then you total the points and select the best for further action.
Close the meeting by thanking everyone for their input. Mention again one of two of the best, most inventive or funniest ideas. Then see which ideas you can implement - even if they are small things.
People enjoy short, high-energy brainstorms that lead to actions. These meetings can motivate people, improve efficiency and drive innovation.
